Mastodon Quick Tip #1

Here’s a quick tip if you long for the columns of a TweetDeck-like interface for Mastodon.

In the right column of your Mastodon Home screen, click on Preferences (with the “gear” icon).

Mastodon default

On your Preferences page, check the box labeled “Enable advanced web interface”. Then be sure to click the button to “Save changes”.

Next you can configure your columns. You can pin/unpin columns, and change the right-most column to things like DMs, #Explore, etc.

I’ve explored some Mac apps that function like TweetDeck but haven’t really found anything good. I’m going to try Mast (spending a whopping $3) and see how it compares. It’s Mac only though. By the way, I’m using TweetBot for Twitter and I have loved it. Maybe they’ll support Mastodon someday.

What to do When Social Networks Have a Meltdown

This is the beginning of an idea to re-think social media platforms. There won’t be much information in this post because it’s really a test, but I will provide some links that will show you that there is life after Twitter or whatever social network goes belly-up.

I know CogDog is experimenting… when isn’t he?

Also Aaron Parecki has been doing this for a while, and he talks about it at length is this YouTube livestream (starting at the 16 minute mark).

That’s all the info I’m giving, for now.

Also, I’m guessing that this will double post. If it did, I’m doing something right.

It Mostly Worked

So the cross-posting extravaganza mostly worked. A bare link on Twitter but not sure why it didn’t post the title. No active links in the Mastodon post, but all the text came through. It worked the same way on the micro.blog/andyrush site, again with no active links.

This site, called MicroThoughts, is usually where I post from. Most of the time a micro blog post is composed in a program called MarsEdit, which I’ve mentioned before.
